Fundamental Cleansing Techniques in Professional Yoga Instructor Training

In classical Hatha Yoga, purification of the body and mind is not a secondary practice, but an essential foundation of the yogic path.

Without shatkarmas and kriyas, it is impossible to properly prepare the nervous system, breath, and consciousness for deeper practices such as pranayama, dharana, and meditation.

For this reason, professional yoga instructor training programs place special emphasis on these techniques.

A yoga instructor must not only be able to perform them, but also deeply understand their mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, and correct teaching methodology.

Kapalabhati

Cleansing and Revitalization of the Frontal Lobes of Both Brain Hemispheres

Kapalabhati translates as “the shining skull” or “the radiant intellect.”

Formally, this technique belongs to pranayama, yet in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika it is classified as a shatkarma due to its powerful cleansing effect on the brain and nervous system.

Kapalabhati:

•actively cleanses the frontal lobes of the brain,

•stimulates and “awakens” the mind,

•massages the abdominal organs,

•improves respiratory function and blood circulation.

For a yoga instructor, Kapalabhati is not merely a breathing exercise, but a tool for regulating states of consciousness.

Technique

Sit in a stable seated posture with an upright spine:

Sukhasana, Padmasana, Siddhasana (Siddha Yoni Asana), or Vajrasana.

•Only the exhalation is active

•Inhalation is passive and silent

•Exhalation is performed by a sharp contraction of the abdominal muscles

•The chest remains almost motionless

•The spine stays straight, eyes closed

After 10 minutes of practice:

•perform Maha Bandha on exhalation (lungs empty)

•locks are applied from bottom to top and released from top to bottom

•hold the breath as long as comfortably possible

Then perform a second 10-minute round of Kapalabhati and apply Maha Bandha on inhalation, retaining the breath and distributing energy throughout the internal organs.

Minimum — 100 exhalations per round; optimal practice is measured by time.

During the practice, awareness is focused on the Ajna Chakra, observing mental clarity and purification of the frontal brain area.

Contraindications

•less than 4 hours after eating

•before bedtime

•chronic constipation

•peptic ulcer disease

•up to 3 months after childbirth

•abdominal surgery (within 1 year)

Regular practice is the key to results.

Trataka Kriya

A Practice of Concentration and Mental Stability for Yoga Instructors

The primary aim of all meditative practices is mental concentration.

Trataka serves as a bridge between physically oriented yoga practices and deeper mental disciplines leading to higher awareness.

The word “Trataka” means “steady, unmoving gaze.”

This practice develops:

•deep concentration abilities

•mental stability

•inner silence

•cleansing of the tear ducts and visual apparatus

For a future yoga instructor, Trataka forms the foundation of presence and mindful guidance of practice.

Types of Trataka

External Trataka — concentration on an external object

Internal Trataka — holding the inner image, usually in the Ajna Chakra

Technique

Sitting in Siddhasana or Padmasana:

1.Gaze steadily at an object without blinking

2.Close the eyes and observe the afterimage

3.Keep the eyes fully relaxed

4.The object should be at eye level, at arm’s length

Recommended objects:

•candle flame

•black dot

•rising sun

•moon, stars

•mandala, crystal, deity image

During internal Trataka, the image may shift up or down; the practitioner’s task is to stabilize it.

Minimum recommended practice — 15 minutes daily.

Contraindications

•glaucoma

•acute inflammatory eye conditions (for external Trataka)

Internal Trataka has no contraindications.

Agnisara Kriya

Cleansing of the Digestive System and Activation of the Digestive Fire

Agnisara is one of the key kriyas for working with digestion and internal energy.

Effects of the practice:

•strengthens digestive fire

•removes toxins from the body

•stimulates abdominal organs

•reduces excess abdominal fat

•improves liver, spleen, and kidney function

•supports healthy reproductive system function

Technique

•Maximum inhalation

•Complete exhalation

•Breath retention

•Rapid abdominal movements 21–54 times

Practiced in the morning on an empty stomach.

Perform 3 to 6 rounds.

Contraindications

•pregnancy and 2 months postpartum

•hypertension

•heart disorders

•peptic ulcer disease

•abdominal surgery (within 1 year)

•infectious diseases with fever

•malignant tumors

•menstruation

Why These Techniques Are Essential for Future Yoga Instructors

A yoga instructor is not merely a demonstrator of asanas.

A true instructor understands the processes of the body, breath, and consciousness.

That is why, in professional yoga instructor training programs, shatkarmas and kriyas:

•are studied systematically

•are explained from both physiological and energetic perspectives

•are practiced under the supervision of qualified teachers

👉 Conscious purification is the foundation of professional growth in yoga.

Body purification is not an auxiliary element, but a necessary stage of the yogic path.

Through satkriyas, the body becomes a conductor rather than an obstacle, the mind becomes stable, and practice becomes deep and safe.

For this reason, the study of shatkarmas is a mandatory part of yoga instructor training courses, forming a solid foundation for long-term professional development.
