How Classical Hatha Yoga Classes Work: From Your First Steps to Harmony of Body and Mind
Vladimir Bondarenko — Head of the Ukrainian Yoga Alliance and Lead Instructor of Classical Hatha Yoga
Classical Hatha Yoga is much more than physical exercises designed to improve flexibility and strengthen muscles. It is a comprehensive system of working with the body, breath, and mind, helping people develop greater self-awareness, improve concentration, learn to relax, and achieve inner balance.
During our yoga classes in Mamaia, Constanța, and Năvodari, Romania, we gradually explore traditional Classical Hatha Yoga techniques, progressing from simple exercises to more advanced practices.
How Does Each Yoga Class Begin?
Every class begins with joint mobility exercises and a gradual warm-up of the entire body.
This essential preparation helps improve joint mobility, stimulate blood circulation, prepare muscles and ligaments for further practice, and reduce the risk of injury.
We pay attention to all major joints and muscle groups, gradually increasing the intensity of movements.
Proper physical preparation is especially important for beginners who have never practiced yoga before or have limited mobility.
Asanas — Working with the Physical Body
After warming up, we move on to asanas — traditional body postures used in Hatha Yoga.
Asanas help develop flexibility, strengthen muscles, improve posture, enhance coordination, and increase control over the body.
However, in Classical Yoga, the external appearance of a posture is not the most important aspect.
We learn how to enter each asana correctly, maintain the position, control breathing, observe physical sensations, and consciously release the posture.
The main objective is not to perform the most difficult pose but to learn how to work with the body correctly, safely, and consciously.
Pranayama — The Art of Conscious Breathing
An essential part of our classes is pranayama — traditional breathing techniques of Classical Hatha Yoga.
We learn to regulate breathing, gradually master various breathing exercises, develop concentration, and cultivate the ability to calm the mind.
Conscious breathing helps us become more aware of our physical and emotional state, manage tension, and promote relaxation.
Breathing techniques are selected according to each participant’s experience, preparation, and individual needs.
Kriyas and Other Elements of Classical Hatha Yoga
In addition to asanas and pranayama, we introduce selected kriyas — traditional cleansing practices of Hatha Yoga.
Not all ancient techniques are suitable for modern practitioners without specialized preparation. Therefore, we focus only on accessible and safe methods.
I carefully explain the purpose of each practice, how it should be performed, and any possible limitations.
Gradually, students also become familiar with concentration exercises, meditation, and other traditional elements of yoga.
Shavasana — Deep Relaxation
Every yoga class concludes with Shavasana — a practice of deep, conscious relaxation.
At first glance, it may appear very simple: a person lies still, allowing the entire body to relax.
However, Shavasana is an independent and essential component of yoga practice.
It helps gradually release muscular tension, calm breathing, restore energy, and transition from physical activity into a state of inner peace.
We learn not merely to rest but to consciously relax the body while maintaining calm awareness.
Why Do the First Classes Include More Explanations?
During the first few classes, I spend considerable time explaining the techniques and principles of yoga.
It is extremely important to me that every student understands not only how to perform an exercise, but also why we practice it, how it affects the body, and what deserves particular attention.
Yoga is a conscious practice, not simply the mechanical repetition of movements demonstrated by an instructor.
As students become familiar with the fundamental principles, explanations gradually become shorter, allowing significantly more time for actual practice.
This approach helps every participant develop a solid foundation for continued progress.
From Simple to Advanced — Respecting Individual Abilities
Our classes follow the principle of gradual progression.
We do not attempt complicated asanas during the first sessions, nor do we compare the achievements of different students.
Every person has unique physical characteristics, abilities, and levels of experience.
Therefore, the intensity, complexity, and pace of the practice are adapted to each participant’s individual needs.
The most important principles are consistency, correct technique, awareness, and gradual development.
Our Main Goal — Harmony of Body and Mind
We practice yoga not only to become more flexible, improve posture, or strengthen muscles.
Our purpose goes much further.
We learn to understand our bodies, breathe correctly, relax deeply, improve concentration, control our attention, and discover inner balance.
I want our yoga classes to become a special time for every participant — a time for recovery, tranquility, personal development, and renewed energy.
Over time, the skills acquired during yoga practice can also be applied to everyday life — at work, in relationships, during relaxation, and in challenging situations.
